Leila Awadallah is a Palestinian-American dancer, choreographer, and film maker born in Sioux Falls and currently based in the Twin Cities. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a BFA in Dance and minor in Arabic Language and Literature. After graduating, she continued to dance professionally in the Twin Cities with many different projects and companies; most notably Ananya Dance Theatre (ADT). Leila danced with ADT for 6 years touring, performing and teaching around universities and theaters all over the US as well as abroad in India, Ethiopia, and Palestine. Leila's personal work and research in dance has been presented in the Twin Cities, Winona MN, Washington DC, Beirut Lebanon and Bethlehem Palestine. She taught at SPCPA in 2018 - 2019 and guest taught at Hamline University, the Cowles Center, and the Shawngram Institute. She received a SAGE Award for her work in film, and was a Springboard 20/20 fellow 2018-2019 which supported her deepening research in arabic traditional dance as well as Arab contemporary dance. She fell in love with dance at a young age at Balleraena Dance studio and her love and curiosity never stopped.

Class description

Leila's class is built on movement, musical rhythms and technical roots from dance styles based in the Middle East, India and North Africa so that students can learn within a style of contemporary dance that comes from knowledge and practices of different Eastern dance forms. As she studied Yorchha with ADT for 6 years, there are influences of odissi - classical Indian dance, chhau - Indian martial arts, and vinyasa yoga in her movement as well as more arabic dance forms such as the fluid torso of baladi, raks sharqi and the rhythmic footwork of dabke. The class will consist of material that emerges from many rich cultural styles, and the students will have a chance to try new things and challenge themselves with groundedness, slowness, balances, fluidity and much more!
